Wellness Corner:
Lambs and Leadership by Joanne Kosta, RN
We have six little baby lambs and a few tired mothers. They are darling and also interesting to observe. We refer to and read about lambs as followers but the truth is—it only takes one to start the action. When one takes off to run, scatter, or frolic—the others quickly follow. The grown up sheep do the same. Especially when it comes to something that scares them. You would be wise to move out of their way or risk being trampled by the herd of sheep energy that is taking off.
In this Easter season, I have been reflecting on how we influence each other and conscious of the fact that we followers and leaders. We can guide each other to a greater good by the positive ways we live our lives, but can also lead each other astray by our own misguided beliefs, excessive fears, or careless behaviors. It is normal as humans to be vigilant in our observations of others and we are genuinely interested in other people. We like to follow because it is more comfortable most of the time. Firstborns will tell you the injustice of that!
I know my friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances have influenced me. Sometimes, I have been inspired to do better. Sometimes, I have been inclined to settle for the lowest acceptable way to live because it “works” for you. I am a little afraid at times when I think that people might actually be “watching” me and deciding which path they want to take.
We have to ask ourselves before we take off and follow (or lead), “Is this really the direction I want to go? How am I influencing others? Is it is a way toward goodness? What do I need to take a look at in myself and change if necessary? What do I need to do more of? Less of?”
We might think that our actions are so common and our motives so lacking in purposeful merit that no one would even notice…much less be influenced by our lives. Not true! Whether we are in the public eye, serving as a parent, customer, church goer, organizer or helper in a group function—others are watching and learning from you. I learn from you every day. Thank you for the influence that you are in my life. I am braver because of it.
