Travels with Bubba and Bonnie
It was one of those beautiful sunny days
that hints spring will soon be here. I had a wild idea to replay a bit of my
youth and feed the swans, geese, and ducks at the Castalia duck pond. First
stop was the Gries Seed Farm Drive through for a bit of shelled corn. (Grandpa
always said Gries Seed Farm had the best shell corn in the area).
The drive to Castalia was filled with that
special banter that couples in love have between each other. We arrived at the
Castalia duck pond about twelve-noon and the geese and ducks all wanted lunch.
The sunshine reflected off the cool clear water and a gentle breeze kissed our
faces, making this an extra special event. I was getting hungry enough to
consider cooking a goose but the Queen Goddess wouldn't hear of it.
Located at 107 Main Street in Castalia,
The Cold Creek Cafe was our destination. They are open Sunday, Monday
and Tuesday from 7am till 2pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 7am till
8pm.
It is a friendly little place in downtown
Castalia. We have more than a few wonderful memories that center around the Cold
Creek Cafe.
We had been to the Cold Creek Cafe last
summer. Our dear friend Martha Rogers had invited us to join her last summer for
a Gospel Sing featuring Mini Pearl. I remember the pork chops and the perch
sandwich were excellent. They still have the Gospel sings the first Thursday
evening of the month. The Queen Goddess even had a discussion with a very young
Castalia police officer about expired license plates.
I'll admit I forgot to ask our server her
name. She was a young gal full of energy that had Happy Eyes and a quick smile.
Breakfast is served all day so the Queen Goddess chose a Western Omelet with
hash brown taters and rye roast. The plate was overflowing with hot and robust
goodness. The Smuckers Jam container on the table even had apple butter as a
choice. The coffee was also robust and plentiful.
Happy Eyes mentioned to me they had
Country Fried Steak on special. She won my vote for server of the week
immediately. Country Fried Steak is one of my favorite comfort foods. Since we
stood in the cool breeze feeding the geese I was a bit chilled. The hot tea,
country fried steak, hash brown taters , great gravy ladled over it all, warmed
me both physically and emotionally. Y'all gotta try this
meal!
We have now shared one of our secret
places to snuggle, kiss, and eat. Dinner, for two including coffee, sales tax
and a generous gratuity for Happy Eyes was under $25.00. If you should go to the
Cold Creek Cafe before we return just tell 'em Bubba and Bonnie sent you.
The Queen Goddess didn't forget dessert.
Dairy Queen is open in Fremont and she needed a Chocolate Cherry Love
Blizard.
