Life as a Temptation
By Helen Marketti
"Motown music was the primary influence for me. There was extraordinary presentation. You could look at them (The Temptations) and see they were unlike any other group. The way they appeared, performed and sang influenced me the most." Sharing his thoughts about the singing group he idolized as a teenager Damon Harris would later find himself right in the midst of their presence as he became a "second generation" member of the group replacing his vocal hero, Eddie Kendricks.
Eddie Kendricks, Damon sang the falsetto highs that matched Eddie's. He perfected the sound of his idol during his high school days so much so that others would comment on how much they sounded alike. "To me Eddie was the total package. First of all he had a lot of attention from the women," Damon laughs. "His sound, his manner on stage and his charisma was very compelling."

The last line of the concert poster reads "Don't Miss this Historic Show!" Historic indeed as the ticket prices alone seem embarrassing by today's rock and roll standards.

History Notebook: Mrs. Taft

Venus Williams, Milie Cyrus, Oprah Winfrey, Condoleezza Rice, and Katie Couric are just a few of the notable figures who serve as role models for today’s young women. But in the 19th century, it was an altogether different matter! Barred from voting and severely limited in establishing an independent career, women rarely rose to national prominence. But Helen Herron, a Cincinnati teen found her role model – First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes. At the age of seventeen, "Nellie," as her friends called her, visited the White House. She and her entire family were guests of President Rutherford B. and First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes. From that day forward, Helen knew that she wanted to become First Lady more than anything in the world. Years later, she recalled that her visit to the Hayes White House was "the only unusual incident of her girlhood!"
