Bakin' Bits
Confessions of Garage Sale Gertie
By Bonnie Dick

I can't wait for spring, because it means GARAGE SALES!  I'm a nut for 'em.  I generally don't buy much, but once in awhile I find a real bargain.  A few years ago I bought a 65 piece set of china with platinum trim.  A check of E-Bay found the same set with less pieces sellling for $625!  I still have the set because it is beautiful and now I'll have two nice sets to pass on to two children.

Once while visiting my sister in Florida I found an exact duplicate to a handmade cutting board I bought on a Carribean island for $25.00.  Price at the garage sale?  One dollar!   So I guess it evens out, doesn't it?

I especially love the city wide sales.  I missed Green Springs sales this year because we were in Ann Arbor visiting the daughter.  I won't miss Clyde's city wide sales this year though.  Always the last weekend in July, there are usually over 100 garage sales, so mark your calendar and come on over here for some great bargains.

One of my favorite collectables in the sales are cookbooks.   I bring them home and go through them with those colored little sticky tabs and make copies of the ones that interest me.  These are put into a file to cook for my guys when I get time.  Then the books go back into my stack of things to sell for my own garage sale every year.  It's recycling at its best.  One of my favorite cookbooks from the sales is Best Recipes of the Great Food Companies, and the recipes that follow are favorites of mine from that book.  Bon Appetit!

LIPTON ONION POTATOES

2 lbs. potatoes, washed and cut into bite size pc.
1/2 c. oil
1 envelope Lipton Onion Soup Mix

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix all ingredients in a bag and spread into a baking pan.  Cook 45 minutes, turning once.  (these are quick to fix, you don't have to peel them, and you can use any kind of potato).

TURKEY JOES

1 lb. Louis Rich ground turkey
1 medium onion, chopped
1 cup barbecue sauce
1 tbl. sweet pickle relish
6 hamburger buns

Place turkey and onion in skillet.  Cook over medium heat 8 - 10 minutes or until turkey is no longer pink, stirring and separating turkey as it cooks.  Stir in barbecue sauce and relish.  Cook 2-3 minutes more.  Serve on buns.   Serves 6.

2 tbl skim milk                        veg. cooking spray
3 1/2 cups Kellogg's
Corn Flakes

In large saucepan, combine oleo, caramels, and milk.  Cook and stir over low heat until melted and smooth, stirring instantly.  Remove from heat.  Add remaining ingredients, mixing until evenly combined.  Drop by rounded measuring-tablespoon onto baking sheet coated with cooking spray.  Cool.  Store tightly covered at room temperature.

If you have a good recipe for a creamy cole slaw dressing, would you email me at ldick1@woh.rr.com.  Thank you!
